Women Bare It All Graphic
Actual Photograph by Caleb Winters

"Women Bare It All"

The first project my graphic design 2 class was asked to design was a piece that communicated a message relating to the women and gender field. Immediately, I thought of my friend Caleb Winters and a photograph he took of himself dressed in drag. I envisioned him as a graphic translation repeated many times while overlapping. After asking for Caleb’s permission, I traced his photo with the pen tool in illustrator. The message I wanted to give my audience was the different stereotypes we place on people who dress in drag or are transgender. The colors of the clothes in the “first Caleb” is a “Diva-like” color (purple) showing what Caleb really looks like and what he wants people to see him as. The “second Caleb” is the colors of the rainbow, showing how we stereotype transgender people as homosexual. The “third and forth Caleb” are pink and blue, showing how we assign transgender/drag queens to a certain gender. I named the piece “A stand Against Transgender Stereotyping”. The piece was a success in which it was selected to appear in Rennes, France in the Women Bare It All exhibition and also at the Nazareth Student Art Show.
